About the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program
The UNC Health Johnston PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of highly trained clinical pharmacists, eligible for board certification, medication-related patient care, and postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training. Our purpose is to develop community-based, pharmacist leaders with the ability to provide patient-centered pharmaceutical care as an integral member of the healthcare team.
Our program is customized for each resident based on his or her goals, interests, and experience and offers an accelerated learning opportunity in inpatient pharmacy operations, clinical competency, clinical research, and leadership development. All residents are required to complete learning experiences in core subject areas considered to be essential to pharmacy practice. Residents are also expected to complete various projects throughout the year, including a research project, poster presentation of a medication use evaluation (MUE), and ACPE-approved continuing education.
Benefits and Compensation
Residents receive full benefits as new UNC Health Johnston employees. A travel allowance will be provided to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, a regional residency research symposium, and/or other selected meetings. Residents are provided with dedicated office space containing a computer, phone, storage/filing space, as well as a shared printer. In addition, residents receive remote access to the hospital network, comprehensive drug information resources, and free parking. The Department of Pharmacy also has an active continuing education program, with opportunities offered on a monthly basis.
Special Requirements for Acceptance
Graduate of an ACPE-accredited PharmD program, eligible for licensure in the state of North Carolina, and a US citizen or carry a permanent visa. UNC Health Johnston does not provide visa sponsorship for pharmacy residents. Candidates must apply using the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). A program-specific supplemental form should also be completed and uploaded to PhORCAS.

The UNC Health Johnston PGY1 Residency Program is currently in Candidate Status.
- Candidate status granted to a program that has a resident(s) in training, has applied to ASHP for accreditation, and is awaiting the official site survey, and review and evaluation by the Commission on Credentialing.

Teaching Experiences
- Serve as primary preceptor for 1 to 2 pharmacy students
- Opportunity to complete the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Teaching & Learning Certificate Program
- Serve as a TA for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy as needed
- Additional teaching opportunities may include didactic lecturing, in-services, and departmental presentations
Research
- Complete and present a residency research poster to peers at the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting and a platform presentation at a regional pharmacy conference
- Prepare a manuscript suitable for publication
Staffing
- Residents are required to staff the pharmacy every fourth weekend (8-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday), and one shift each week during some of their clinical rotation months. The weekend of ASHP Midyear may be excluded from this requirement in order to permit attendance at the ASHP Midyear meeting.
- Residents will be expected to staff 1-2 holidays as defined in the UNC Health Johnston Pharmacy Policies and Procedures, based on departmental needs.
