Matthew Jones, PharmD

Matthew Jones, PharmDWhere are you from? Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?
I’m originally from Halifax, Virginia, where I grew up before moving to North Carolina for pharmacy school. I currently live in Clayton, NC.

Education and Training:
I earned my Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences in 2025 and my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Longwood University in 2020. My previous experience includes working as a pharmacy intern at Duke University Hospital and Wellness Compounding Pharmacy, as well as serving as a Patient Care Coordinator at C3 Healthcare Rx. I am currently completing my PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at UNC Health Johnston.

Interests and Long-Term Goals:
I’m passionate about internal medicine, emergency medicine, and infectious diseases. Long-term, I hope to practice as a clinical pharmacist or pursue a PGY2 in emergency medicine or critical care.

Hobbies and Favorites:
Outside of pharmacy, I enjoy fishing, gardening, and home improvement projects. My favorite food is pizza, and my favorite dessert is a sfogliatella. I also like exploring new local restaurants around the Triangle area. In my free time, I enjoy DIY projects and spending time with my family.

Why Johnston?
I chose UNC Health Johnston because of its strong sense of community, diverse clinical experiences, and supportive preceptors who are deeply invested in resident growth. The residency program provides an ideal balance of autonomy and mentorship, and the environment encourages residents to pursue research and leadership opportunities.

Why Pharmacy?
I chose pharmacy because it combines science, patient care, and problem-solving in a way that allows me to make a tangible impact on patient outcomes. Pharmacy offers a unique opportunity to collaborate across disciplines while optimizing medication therapy and advancing healthcare quality.

Where are you from? Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?
I am originally from the small town of Pink Hill, North Carolina, where I was born and raised. I recently relocated to Clayton, NC, to be closer to my residency site.

Education and Training:
I completed both my undergraduate and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees at Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences through the 3+1 program, earning a bachelor’s degree in general science followed by a PharmD. During pharmacy school, I gained valuable community pharmacy experience working part-time at Parker’s Drugs in Mount Olive, NC.

Interests and Long-Term Goals:
My professional interests include internal medicine and critical care, with a strong passion for providing direct patient care in the hospital setting. I enjoy collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to optimize treatment plans and improve patient outcomes. My long-term goal is to practice in a small community hospital, where I can continue to grow clinically while contributing to the advancement of patient care and hospital services.

Hobbies and Favorites:
Outside of pharmacy, I enjoy staying active and spending time outdoors. Whether this is through golfing, fishing, going to the beach, working out, being on the water. I also enjoy traveling to different countries and experiencing new things.

Why Johnston?
Having grown up in a small town, I value the close-knit, family-like environment of community hospitals. My experiences during P4 rotations reaffirmed my appreciation for the personal connections and meaningful impact that come from serving patients in smaller healthcare settings. UNC Health Johnston stood out to me as the exact representation of what I wanted in a residency and hospital all in one.

Why Pharmacy?
I knew since early in life that I wanted to go into the medical field. As a personable and team-oriented individual, I enjoy collaborating with other healthcare professionals and building relationships with patients to help them achieve the best possible outcomes. I have always been very strong in math and science in school, so that also helped solidify my decision to pursue becoming a pharmacist.
