Marvels Honored with Cancer Survivorship Fund

The Marvel family standing in front of small jet.One of the Johnston Health Foundation’s most dedicated board members recently received a heartfelt birthday gift and warm recognition for his service. During the “Toast to Our Champions” donor appreciation reception on April 29, the foundation announced the creation of a cancer survivorship fund in honor of Mike Marvel and his wife, Pam.

With their birthdays just seven days apart, the Marvels typically celebrate together. And for the Clayton couple, who already have everything they need, a gift that benefits the community felt especially meaningful, said their daughter, Megan Cranfill of Apex.

In three weeks, the Marvels’ network of family and friends raised $42,000 for the cause, and many longtime friends and family members gathered to celebrate with them at the event.

“The Marvel Cancer Survivorship Fund will support cancer patients after treatment, helping them navigate the emotional and physical challenges that often continue well beyond their diagnosis,” said Allison Strickland, the foundation’s director.

Shortly after Mike, a retired golf pro, joined the board in 2015, the foundation launched a campaign to purchase two 3D mammography systems for the Clayton and Smithfield hospitals.

“I really enjoyed working on that project,” he said. “Volunteering with the foundation has been a blessing. I love helping people, and when you see what the foundation does, it makes you feel good.”

Among other things, Mike has been key to the success of UNC Health Johnston Derby Day and has helped to grow the fundraiser into a signature community event. His term on the board ends in November.

“Mike’s dedication is contagious. He doesn’t just show up, he inspires others to get involved,” Strickland said. “This fund is a testament to the love the community has for him and Pam and celebrates the impact they continue to make in the lives of others.”

Pam was also delighted with the new fund. “Offering this kind of support will be amazing,” she said. Both she and Mike are cancer survivors, making the new initiative deeply personal.

“Our mission is to build a healthier community,” Strickland added. “Mike and Pam embody that mission through their compassion and service.”
