Cancer Support & Survivorship

Improve your quality of life during cancer care with support and resources for you and your family at UNC Health Johnston.

Education & Support Groups

Our cancer support programs are led by our oncology social worker. The purpose of the groups are to help cancer patients cope with their diagnosis by combining an educational and emotional approach. We also provide a safe place for patients, caregivers, family members and cancer survivors to share common experiences, feelings and concerns.

Please contact our office at 919-989-2192 for support program dates, times and locations.

Cancer Patient Navigation

After you receive test results that suggest cancer, you may meet with a patient navigator to discuss next steps. Turn to the nurse navigator for guidance throughout your cancer care journey—free of charge. You can receive help:

  • Understanding your diagnosis and treatment options
  • Communicating with providers
  • Getting referrals for appointments
  • Overcoming obstacles to care

Social Work Services

Ask our cancer social worker or patient navigator to connect you with resources in the community and at UNC Health Johnston, such as:

The social worker also leads UNC Health Johnston’s cancer support groups and can help you and your family cope with a cancer diagnosis.

Survivorship Care Plan

If your cancer is stage 3 or lower, you’ll receive a survivorship care plan after treatment ends. This plan summarizes the treatment you received and explains how to protect your health in the future. It may describe:

  • Ways to prevent and recognize possible long-term side effects of treatment
  • Recommendations for cancer screenings
  • Community support and resources
  • Advice for healthy living

Discuss your survivorship plan with your primary care provider, who can help make sure you get the health services you need.

Rehabilitation

During or after cancer treatment, take advantage of rehabilitation services and massage therapy to increase your energy and strength. Rehabilitation can also help you more easily do daily activities if treatment affects your physical abilities.
